🚨🚨SPOILER ALERT🚨🚨
Before we begin this blog, from here on out, major spoilers will be brought up from both Mob Psycho 100 and Gravity Falls, including major plot points and character moments surrounding Reigen and Stan. That being said, if you are not familiar with either series and don’t want to be spoiled, I strongly advise that you stop reading from this point.
Still here? Awesome…
—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reigen Arataka, Seasoning City’s number one “esper” from Mob Psycho.
Stanley Pines, Gravity Falls’ number one “supernatural know-it-all” from… Gravity Falls.
Con-artists, am I right?
They’re always trying to cause you trouble by playing with your mind and scamming you with their too-good-to-be-true goods and services. But in worlds where the supernatural is abundant, these two con artists might just be the most reliable people you can turn to.
They may be kind men deep down, but what happens when two of the sneakiest, quick-witted, and downright brutal con-men come face to face with each other? Who will scam the other first and who will come out on top in a good old fashioned brawl to the death?
Before we get started…
The media we will be using for Reigen and Stan should be simple enough to follow. Both of their verses are somewhat self contained with a few exceptions here and there, but there is a clearcut canon that will be used for this blog.
Reigen’s, and in turn Mob Psycho 100’s, canon material is as follows:
- The original Mob Psycho webcomic
- The original Mob Psycho 100 manga
- The Mob Psycho 100 anime
- Mob Psycho 100: Official Fanbook
- REIGEN The Miraculous Unknown Psychic OVA (mostly a recap of Season 1)
- Reigen manga spinoff
Stan’s, and in turn Gravity Falls’, canon material is as follows:
- The main Gravity Falls show (with a few exceptions)
- Journal 3
- Gravity Falls: Lost Legends graphic novel
- Dipper and Mabel’s Guide to Mystery and Nonstop Fun
- The Book of Bill (but it ain't out yet lol)
When I mention a few exceptions, I’m talking about the episodes that contain stories that seemingly have no evidence to prove that they’re canon. Certain stories from the “Bottomless Pit!” episode, the “Little Gift Shop of Horrors” episode, and all of the Gravity Falls shorts will be considered non-canon.
We will be giving Reigen and Stan everything for this fight with the exception of allies, so Reigen won’t have Mob, Dimple, or Serizawa while Stan won’t have Dipper, Mabel, Ford, or the rest of his staff. Any specific cases that we need to make for certain parts of their arsenal will be covered in Before the Verdicts.
We’re also gonna assume that Reigen and Stan can speak the same language since it’d be a very awkward fight if they only kept their native languages.
With all that being said, let’s get into this blog.
Background
Reigen Arataka
"If you want to make it big, you have to live in reality!"
The world contains many strange phenomena that science could never begin to explain. Many evil spirits lurk about, ruining the lives of the common people they come into contact with, but luckily for the world of Mob Psycho, there persists numerous fighters that shine a ray of hope into the chaos that is spiritual darkness, aka, espers. In the case of Seasoning City, it was not only the home of countless evil spirits but it was also the place of residence for a terrorist organization consisting of many evil espers, going by the name Claw.
Luckily for Seasoning City, it’s also the home of the self-proclaimed “Greatest Psychic of the 21st Century”, you know him, Tumblr loves him, Reigen Arataka.
For as high as mighty as Reigen seemed to be, it wasn’t always that way. Prior to the events of Mob Psycho, Reigen was simply your average salesman, but wanting to achieve more in life, he quit his job in favor of pursuing a considerably more niche job that he had once seen as an ad in a magazine: psychic-related services. He kickstarted a one-man agency of many changing names, those being Reigen’s Exorcism Place, Consultation with Arataka, Reigen Triumphant Against Evil, but only one name stuck around: the Spirits and Such Consultation Office. Even with the very real issue that Reigen is in fact NOT a psychic, he still took his job very seriously, willing to listen to his clients and solve their problems through… other means necessary. Despite the seemingly out-of-place methods of exorcising “spirits”, his business became nothing more than a success. That being said, his wits and charisma could only take him so far when he had to face an actual spirit on top of the fact that he had found his current job to be boring, going as far as to consider quitting entirely, but fate would save Reigen as the answer to all his problems would quite literally walk into his office, a young Shigeo Kageyama looking to control his psychic powers, aka Mob.
Once he had hired the kid after discovering his powers, it was smooth sailing for them both for a while. Reigen instantly saw how useful Mob would be in expanding his business further while Mob looked up to him as a role model, wanting to fit in with everyone around him despite his supernatural abilities. From that day on, the work routine would follow as Reigen taking up a client’s request, trying his best to remove the spirit, and when all else failed, he would either call up Mob to exorcise the spirit or already have him by his side to deal with the upcoming troubles. With this procedure set in stone, Mob and Reigen would fight off the many foes that came their way, whether it’d be the spirit of a bike gang leader, urban legends within the neighboring city of Cuticle City, or that entire Claw terrorist organization I mentioned earlier. Yeah they were a real pain in the ass to deal with in Mob’s case but Reigen managed to get by without sustaining damage… somehow. Simply put, Mob was the brawn of the duo while Reigen was the brains.
Don’t get it twisted however. Even if Reigen has no qualms about using anyone to his advantage, he does have a particular soft spot for Mob. His relationship with Mob had forever changed Reigen into a better person despite his initial intentions to get rid of Mob when they first met. Mob had found a mentor he could look up to when he needed the most help, and Reigen had found someone he could call his first ever friend. He felt like he needed Mob because he had no one else, resulting in his dependence on Mob out of fear of leaving him behind. His constant summonings out of the blue and his control over Mob when he’s doing his job would eventually anger Mob; Mob truly did reach his breaking point (not literally because we know how that goes) when Reigen essentially told him to abandon the friends that were supposedly only using him and not considered real friends.
This conflict would lead to them going separate ways to Reigen’s surprise. Mob’s absence didn’t stop him however as he would harken back to the methods he utilized in his business before Mob came around. Deciding to move on from the ordeal for the time being, he focused on building his reputation via helping around the city and taking on bigger requests such as getting rid of a spirit posing as a player in an online game (scary!!). He would quickly rise in fame, becoming known as “Spice City’s Bro” among the people and in several magazines, eventually getting the offer of a lifetime: to star on television. He instantly accepted the offer but little did he know that he was being set up by an esper that was seeking revenge on him, leading to the embarrassing result that Reigen did in fact not possess any spiritual powers.
His reputation would immediately plummet thanks to that little stunt, sending Reigen down a path worse than before. His acquaintances were ignoring him, private detectives were following him, and news reporters were gathering outside his very home. Luckily he was offered a press conference to explain everything, and when the day came, he managed to hold his ground and casually ward off curious reporters but the conference had consequently awoken the flashback of how he met Mob. It finally made him grasp just how manipulative he had been to Mob specifically, realizing that he should let him grow up into his own person rather than box him in for his own selfish reasons. Once he tuned back into the conference, he tells Mob through live television that he has grown up, and while this confuses the reporters, Mob would be able to save Reigen from the conference as he used his powers to trick everyone into thinking Reigen was using his powers for real this time. They would finally reunite as working buddies once again and Reigen would treat them both to ramen like he had done so in the past.
Reigen may be a con artist but he is one that demonstrates honor and sincerity unlike any other. Despite working in such a shady business, he still had a wise and caring nature to him that is very apparent once you get to know him. Strangers such as Claw’s subordinates saw him as noble even when they found out that Reigen was lying about being “The Boss”. Above anything else, he is willing to take the burden of others’ troubles and put his life on the line for those he cares about most, such as when he literally walked up to Tochiro, one of the most powerful psychics in the world, with only a gun in his hands. He always listened to all of Mob’s bothers and always told him to never stoop down to his enemies level unless the situation really calls for it since he is very aware of the fact that Mob doesn’t want to actively hurt others. He’s always cared for him regardless of how he treated him, and this is very apparent in the final arc.
When Mob was forced to go ???% after he had been hit by a car, Reigen was determined to get close enough to Mob to snap him out of his berserk mode when no one else could. He desperately chases after Mob despite all the wind gusts pushing him back and debris being thrown in his direction, and he could only reach him once Dimple had possessed him and gotten him in front of Mob. It was at this moment that Reigen cried out his biggest lie to Mob: he ain’t no esper, he ain’t got no psychic powers, he was a FRAUD (but we still love him). He begins to cry out of pure shame, admitting that he had not only been deceiving Mob but all his customers this entire time. Confessing these lies would have the opposite effect as Mob would further gain respect for him as his master, and although he would be crushed by Tsubomi’s rejection (the whole reason Mob was destroying the city was to go up to Tsubomi and confess his love to her), Reigen would be there to comfort him, telling him that his life was only just starting.
In time, Mob would see himself as an equal to others, feeling like he can fit in with the school for once. He had bright plans for his future but he never forgot about his master and all the things he had done for him to reach this point. Reigen would also continue to grow as not just a person but his business as well with some new assistants to impress. He would see them just like how he saw Mob, leading to what could’ve been him sacrificing himself to get rid of a life-force sucking spirit that was terrorizing them. Even in such a situation Reigen would still call up Mob who would get rid of the spirit for him, just like old times.
No matter the request his customers make, you can always count on Reigen to be there to accept it.
Stanley Pines
"When there's no cops around, anything's legal!"
Deep within the forests of central Oregon rests the rustic lumber town of Gravity Falls (deja vu perhaps?). Despite its seemingly average nature akin to your usual rural-based settlement, Gravity Falls is anything but. Weirdness runs amok the lands of this town as it acts a magnet for anything strange and peculiar, whether it’d be rainbow-vomiting gnomes, living wax figures, time babies, triangle-shaped demons, so on and so forth. With all these strange phenomena thriving within the lands, it’d only be a matter of time before capitalists took advantage of it to make millions for themselves. Luckily for Gravity Falls, there was only one man who could do the job right.
Enter Stanley Pines, better known by the residents as Grunkle Stan.
Born on June 15th 1954 in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey, Stan Lee lived out his life with his mom, dad and his twin brother Stanford Pines. Despite growing up as twins, they both had lived very different lives compared to the other, with Stanley being the not-so-academically-bright trouble-maker and Stanford being the straight A student with a bright future ahead of him. Not wanting to let go of that childhood promise he made with Ford about traveling the word together, Stanley would end up accidentally destroying the very invention that Stanford needed in order to be accepted to his dream college. With his brother rightfully pissed at him and his parents kicking him out of the house, Stanley would go down the path of a businessman in order to prove to his family that he has the potential to make millions just like his brother could.
Unfortunately for Stanley, the salesman business was a lot rougher than he initially thought. Whether it’d be his faulty products, his numerous periods of time in prison, or his bans from many states and countries, life wasn’t looking the best for our fellow con-man. That would soon change however, as Stanley would get a postcard from a familiar face, asking him to come visit Gravity Falls. When he arrives, he is greeted by none other than Ford, but instead of getting a warm welcome like any other brother would, Ford only wanted Stanley to hide his journal, aka Journal 1, for him. This would end up kickstarting a fight between the two, resulting in Stanford being sucked into the interdimensional portal he had created. Stanley had now been stripped of everything he held dear, feeling defeated as he walked into town weeks after the incident to buy food since Ford’s food supply ran out. Things would end up taking a turn for the better however, as Stanley would be mistaken for his brother by the local residents, resulting in his best idea yet: to use the people’s interest in Ford’s experiments to give them a tour of the shack, letting him make a living while staying within Gravity Falls. From that moment on, Stanley Pines would now don the identity of Stanford Pines and spend his time in Gravity Falls to bring his brother back, no matter what it took.
Although it had a rocky start, Stan’s first tour was a success, absolutely hitting it off with the residents and eventually leading to the birth of the Murder Hut, but then to the much more appropriately named Mystery Shack. The newfound tourist trap was especially a hit with people outside of Gravity Falls, becoming a major attraction of the town and making millions like Stan had hoped. He wanted the place to continue to be a success so that he could pay the rent and keep the portal in his possession as he was attempting to re-activate the portal to bring back his brother every night.
The thing about Stanley is that beneath all the facades and cunningness, he holds a deep sense of loyalty for whom he considers his family. He was not ready to let go of his brother despite their shaky bond, and when his great niece and nephew Dipper and Mabel Pines would come stay with him for the summer, he would develop a new feeling of protectiveness for them. Stan was ready to put both his reputation and even his life on the line when the twins needed him the most, whether it’d be him ditching the election to save them when they were dangling from a monument, fighting off an oncoming zombie army to protect them, or even THAT happening during Weirdmaggedon (which I’ll get to real soon), he’ll always put family first before anything else.
Over the course of the summer, Stan would have many great adventures with the twins, whether it’d be fishing trips, going through the hell that is Pioneer Day, sabotaging every plan of Gideon’s (his sworn archenemy), or any other wacky supernatural experience, Stan would get ever-so-closer with the twins, seeing them as a sort of newfound family, a family that actually cared for him as a person. When Stan eventually had Gideon arrested for his crimes and learned of the fact that Dipper had Journal 3, he would finally have everything he needed to bring his brother back.
Using all 3 of the journals, he manages to turn on the machine after many years of trying (and failing) to open the portal, and from that moment on continues to tinker with it to fully fix it. The power surge coming from the portal was so strong however that it caught the attention of the U.S. government, eventually leading to his arrest due to his supposed robbery of toxic chemicals. Stan manages to escape and baits the agents to get them off his tail, running to the shack and making it to the portal room right before Dipper was about to shut it down. Despite Dipper’s and Soos’ best efforts to shut the portal down, Mabel still trusted him in the end and prevented its shutdown, leading to Ford’s return through the portal after 30 years of his disappearance.
Ford isn’t too happy with Stanley however as Stanley was the reason he was trapped there to begin with, leading everyone to start questioning who Grunkle Stan truly was. After telling his backstory and revealing all the secrets he so desperately tried to hide, Dipper apologizes for not having faith in him. Even after the twins had forgiven him, he still had a rocky relationship with Ford and would continue to have one up until the events of Weirdmageddon. It was during this event that Stan felt the most like a fish-out-of-water, feeling like nobody is taking him seriously and still being mad that Ford never thanked him for saving, and that isn’t even mentioning how Ford was responsible for Weirdmageddon and yet he continues to be treated as a hero. These feelings would continue to build up until he fully lashes out at Ford for always acting like the smart one, not only ruining the plan to seal Bill away but also leading to the capture of Stan and Ford and the transformation of everyone else into decorative curtains. Realizing all the mistakes he’s made as Dipper and Mabel are being chased by Bill, Stan finally realizes how much of a screw-up he is, and wanting to redeem all the trouble he had caused, he comes up with and enacts one final plan to destroy Bill for good. The two brothers would switch identities, tricking Bill into making a deal with who he thought was Ford but actually turned out to be Stan, trapping Bill in the wrong mind once the real Ford starts to erase the real Stan’s mind. Stan manages to defeat Bill with a single punch, erasing him entirely from their reality, but in return, Stan would end up sacrificing his mind, doing so in order to save the people he held close to his heart along with the rest of the world.
Weirdmageddon was fully prevented after Bill was defeated and Gravity Falls was entirely restored, but the victory was that of a bittersweet one. Stan had entirely lost his memories, and it seemed like he would stay that way forever. Out of a pure miracle however, the other Pines and Soos are able to slowly but surely bring back his memories with Mabel’s Summer Memories scrapbook. When Stan does eventually get all his memories back, he decides to accept Ford’s invitation to investigate an anomaly near the Arctic Ocean together, just like how Stan always wanted to during their childhood. Stan would give Soos ownership of the Mystery Shack in his absence, and then he would join our main cast in saying one final goodbye to Dipper and Mabel, who are now going back home. He tries to hide his emotions from them but fails to do so, saying his final goodbye and watching as they depart on their bus.
Despite his life giving him the roughest of times, he ended up being good for something after all.
Experience and Intelligence
Reigen Arataka
Little is known about how Reigen had gotten the wits and charm he puts on full display in the story. He might as well as have been born that way. Whatever the case, Reigen always seems to have a trick up his sleeve.
As a con-artist in a world full of spirits, he was able to kickstart and maintain a successful business surrounding spirits for 4 years even though he was unable to see spirits at the time, let alone deal with them. A lot of his legitimacy comes from the fact that he always puts his customers first, always being able to solve their problems with seemingly little effort. Analyzing people’s psychology and using it to his advantage can be considered his speciality after all.
He is always aware of how Mob is feeling even if his face is usually stoic and doesn’t show any outward emotion, and this same kind of emotional understanding can apply to his naive customers and every other human in the series. He manipulates those emotions and thoughts of others to benefit him and he has no qualms about who he manipulates with the exception of Mob later in the story. He’s seen through the scams of other skilled con-artists and used it against them such as when he outscammed the con artists that were trying to scam Mob out of thousands of yen for a cheap vase, making them believe that they were hurting him psychologically and that they damaged his suit which cost as much as the vase. That wasn’t the only con artist Reigen saw through as he also saw through Roshuto Douzen, a guy who proclaimed he was the strongest psychic in the solar system, and Reigen showed little worry to if he was telling the truth or not. Reigen is generally really composed in almost any situation, opting to not react too adversely to his powerful opponents until they actually start using their power.
Small details have never gotten past Reigen either, whether it’d be his intuition telling him that a private investigator was following him or when he was able to figure out that Minori, an innocent child, was being possessed by an evil spirit. Out of all the actual espers that were hired to eliminate the spirit, only Reigen didn’t fall for her lies. The other espers were thinking Minori’s dad was controlling her for his own gains but Reigen noticed things such as her inconsistent speech patterns, odd changes in speech tone, and the fact that she knew that Reigen was a psychic before he even introduced himself. He used all this info to determine that an evil spirit was at play which turned out to be the case.
Reigen’s facade is practically impossible to notice by your average person. Even when Reigen had a different objective altogether, he accidentally convinced a group of psychic revolutionaries that he was the boss of their Claw organization. It’s no wonder that he managed to keep his business afloat with crappy Photoshops, strange rituals and pretty decent massages despite it being a business focused on “exorcising spirits”. He’s even converted Claw’s 7th Division, a group of superpowered terrorist espers, into finding purpose in life via becoming office workers by reasoning with them long enough. He may be a con-artist but he views all people on the same level regardless of their power, and that mindset is the very reason why he’s considered to be a wise person by many.
Stanley Pines
Stan certainly didn’t have the best of beginnings with how much of an academic idiot he was prior to being kicked out of the household. Once he was on his own however, he became a skilled con-man, and consequently master criminal, in time. One of Stan’s greatest strengths is his age, which while it does catch up with him on occasions, it gives him plenty of experience to pull from.
Even with his many previous failures at tricking people with his cheap products, he was always able to successfully fake his death to move on to the next identity to keep doing what a con-artist does best: scamming the absolute crap out of his customers. He was eventually able to create a successful business from the ground up based on tricking tourists with fake attractions. The fact that he managed to keep up the sham for so long proves that he also doesn’t fool around as a capitalist. He absolutely loves money and isn’t afraid to commit literal crimes such as regular tax fraud to keep that cash flow high.
Speaking of his crimes, Stan has no problem playing dirty against his opponents too. He continues to evade the law and avoid jail even when all his crimes are public, and he has no qualms against cheating should the situation call for it, such as when he used chewed gum to rig a dice roll against enemy players in Dungeons, Dungeons, and more Dungeons. His ability to scheme on the fly is worth noting too as he’s been able to throw off naive U.S. agents off his tail on the spot and trick even the likes of Bill Cipher, the demon who has lived for 1 trillion years and can literally see both the future and infinite possible timelines all at once whenever he wants to (see Before the Verdicts), with a plan that he only had a few minutes to come up with.
He learned how to be really good at tricking people in general, and he likewise has no problem seeing through other people’s tricks such as how he saw through every single one of Gideon’s plans. Mighty impressive when you consider that Gideon at the age of 9 was able to trick an entire town into thinking he was a goody two-shoes. Stan relies a lot on his street smarts and it has managed to work out for him for the most part.
WIth all that old age also comes with a wide variety of knowledge that very few characters in the series can surpass. Stan took the time to read Ford’s Journal 1 which gave him extensive knowledge on the supernatural nature of Gravity Falls, and with that knowledge came his arguably biggest intelligence feat: figuring out how to operate the interdimensional portal that Ford had created. Now of course we’re not directly comparing Stan’s intelligence to that of Ford, that would be absurd. Building the portal would obviously be a lot harder than learning how to use it, but even if Stan didn’t know the ins and outs of the portal, he did very well in reading the journals and learning how to operate the sci-fi machines despite a lack of a formal scientific education.
Ford had purposely made it difficult to learn to use the portal with his complicated and misleading instructions and all the codes and sequences that had to be deciphered in order to understand how the machine worked. That’s not even mentioning how all three journals had to be collected in order to form a diagram of the portal and how it could be turned on. One would definitely need to understand how inter-dimensional technology works to use it, meaning that only Stanford and Fiddleford were the only ones able to use the portal. Through all impossible means however, Stan was able to crack the code and save his brother.
Arsenal
Reigen Arataka
Table Salt
It’s been widely believed in our world that salt is the key to warding off evil spirits, although in the Mob Psycho world it’s nothing more than superstition. Nonetheless Reigen still carries pocket salt to try his best at exorcising those spirits himself.
Reigen Flowing Exorcism Seven-Fold Gadget: Bolt Cutters
Just your average pair of bolt cutters. They seem to do a good job at completely snapping a door handle in half.
Sakurai’s Cursed Perfume
Previously owned by Yusuke Sakurai, this cologne is a spray that almost instantly puts people to sleep. It’s not only able to bypass psychic barriers but it can knock out people as strong as 100% Mob in a single hit. The time spent unconscious can be greatly reduced if one’s mental and psychic strength is high enough. Reigen had confiscated the spray after defeating Sakurai.
Jugar Air Gun
Being another object owned by Sakurai, this air gun shoots out air gun bullets with psychic power charged in each bullet. The small size of the rounds makes it seem like it’s shooting blasts of red energy, but the bullets are still physically present and have been shown to be stopped by telekinesis if it’s strong enough. Reigen attempted to use this gun to attack Toichiro but it was ultimately nullified.
Stanley Pines
Disappearing Smoke Bomb
The perfect tool for whenever Stan wants to make a quick escape from a tricky situation. It helps that they’re pretty easy to use: throw one to the ground to create a cloud of gray smoke and then proceed to run as fast as you can. Just make sure your favorite smoke bomb doesn’t expire!
Baseball Bat
Play ball!
Brass Knuckles
As someone who’s tried his hand at boxing, it would make sense that one of his go-to weapons are brass knuckles. He was able to use them to briefly hold back a few zombies before he had to make a run for it.
Ten Guns
“Studies show that keeping a ladder inside the house is more dangerous than a loaded gun. That’s why I own 10 guns in case some maniac tries to sneak in a ladder.”
Illegal Fireworks
“There’s no way you’re setting off those dangerous illegal fireworks… without me!”
Other Stuff
Stan keeps a chest of weapons on standby in case he needs to fight off the youth… and probably other foes too idk might just be a hunch. The weapons seen include a crossbow, an axe, and a spiked club.
Shanklin the Stab Possum
What happens when you combine the best character in the series with the genius of Stanley Pines? Simple, you get a revolutionary scientific weapon that no has batted an eye to. Primitive but effective.
Stanmobile
This red-colored 1965 El Diablo convertible 4 door sedan is Stan’s sweet ride that’s stuck around with him ever since he got kicked out of his house 40-45 years ago.
Nightmare Head
Being convinced by Soos that the youth could be a good business opportunity for the Mystery Shack, Stan and Soos would build a hot air balloon to advertise the shack. The balloon takes the appearance of Stan himself while bearing the message of “I HEART KIDS”, but the letters fall off which hilariously changes the message to “I EAT KIDS”.
As if that wasn’t terrifying enough, the balloon starts catching fire while plummeting to the ground, terrifying the entire festival audience as a result.
Mystery Shack
The home of everything strange and peculiar in Gravity Falls and is definitely not a place where Stan scams the ever-loving heck out of incoming tourists. It had previously belonged to Ford as his home and base of operations, but once he had been sucked through the interdimensional portal, Stan had no choice but to live there in order to bring his brother back.
I bring it up not because it’s a part of his standard arsenal (and no we’re not giving Stan the Shacktron lol) but rather because the Mystery Shack contains many mysterious items that could provide Stan with some unique utilities if he were to fight against an opponent inside of the Mystery Shack itself.
Goldie
This attraction is one that’s stuck by Stan’s side for a long time, which said attraction is a copper-colored statue of a gold digger from the Gold Rush era. Its main purpose is to give its users nuggets after a nickel was inserted into its slot, but due to its age, it malfunctions pretty hard and completely breaks down. It still has the power to get a few bites in however. In fact it bites hard enough to pierce through metal so watch out for these chompers!
Copier Machine
This copier machine certainly looks like and even acts like your average copier machine but it copies more than just paper. It’s able to create copies of any person that scans themselves on top of the machine, causing a paper copy of them to emerge from the side. It’s unable to copy symbols or accessories like ties but for the most part they are essentially an exact copy of the original person.
The entire person doesn’t even need to be scanned as individual parts such as their arm can be scanned and still function as if it was still attached to a body. Any creations from the copier can be instantly dissolved with water or any form of liquid. Paper jams can also occur which causes the copier to spit out disfigured copies.
Electron Carpet
This carpet hadn’t been found until Soos uncovered the hidden room where it was kept. It’s believed that this room is where Ford Pines’ bedroom was, and this light blue carpet was simply one of Ford’s many experiments (in this case the carpet is experiment 78.
It’s fuzziness is used to conduct enough static electricity to charge up any subject that shuffles enough on top of it, and anyone they immediately come in contact with will result in the two subjects switching bodies. The only way that the subjects can return to their original bodies is by repeating the same action.
Universe Portal
Potentially being one of the most deadly aspects of the Mystery Shack, this portal is hidden away in the underground laboratory of Ford Pines. Activating it requires a complex process that needs all 3 of the journals to fully complete, but once it is activated, it has the capability to destroy the world as it would’ve theoretically caused the merge of their universe with the Nightmare Realm. Ford had only meant to use it to investigate the dimension of weirdness that he was curious about but he was led astray by a certain Bill Cipher who wanted nothing more than to come into the real world and unleash his full power. The entire reason the portal exists is because Bill manipulated Ford into creating a gateway that could’ve led to the destruction of the world had Ford not found out about Bill’s true intentions.
After Ford had accidentally been sucked through the portal during his fight with Stan, Stan would be forced to learn as much as he could about the portal in order to save Ford. The activation process alone can cause anomalies that result in the Earth losing its gravitational pull for a short amount of time, and once it’s fully activated, it explodes with great amounts of energy and destroys its surroundings and itself with the exception of the centerpiece. Once it’s turned on, its energy starts leaking into the world, but by that point Ford had dismantled the gateway as it was too dangerous for the world to handle.
Abilities/Moves
Reigen Arataka
Extrasensory Perception
As an after effect of using Mob’s powers, Reigen had developed the ability to see spirits that he hadn’t been able to previously.
Martial Arts
For what Reigen lacks in psychic power, he is surprisingly capable when it comes to physicality. He is not only abnormally strong compared to regular humans (more on that later), but he also managed to get a green belt in shaolin kung-fu. He uses his fighting skill on more than one occasion to save himself and others from danger.
Salt Splash
Being one of his most iconic attacks in the series, Reigen expertly and violently throws table salt everywhere in hopes of hitting his opponent. Unfortunately the salt he uses isn’t purified salt, making it ineffective against spirits.
In his defense, when has purified salt ever been cheap???
Banishing Salt Punch
Reigen covers his fist with a bunch of table salt and proceeds to punch his opponent with that same fist.
Sorcery Crush
Reigen uses his acupuncture expertise to massage anyone in desperate need of relieving themselves of physical stress, fatigue, and shoulder and back pains.
Graphic Exorcism
Using the power of photo editing software, Reigen removes any evidence of spirits from haunted photographs, making them look natural.
Cheeseburger Tornado
Reigen spins around his entire body, using it as a sort of spring to give himself enough momentum to smash his opponent in the face with a powerful spin. It proved powerful enough to not only send a dangerous client into the air but it also knocked the client unconscious.
Aroma Runaway Express
Reigen uses a mix of Himalayan rock salt, aroma oils, and incense to send his client on a beauty trip that relaxes the body and soul.
Anti-Esper Dropkick
Reigen jumps in the air, pulls back his legs and dropkicks his opponent in the head with both feet as hard as he can. This move works the best on short people (like you!!) but he can do it on regular people if he has a ledge to jump off of.
Hypnosis Punch
Reigen pulls out a coin on a string, attempting to hypnotize them like any other psychic would, but he uses that distraction to suddenly sucker punch his opponent out of nowhere.
Anti-Possession Flying Knee
Reigen performs a flying knee strike to the chest of his target, knocking a possessed person unconscious. He has used this move on Jodo to knock Mogami (an evil spirit) out of his body.
Knee Strike
Unlike his previous kick based move, Reigen grabs his opponent by the back of their neck with both arms and pushes their head down, allowing them to smash them in the face with his knee and giving them a concussion in the process. The force of the blow shakes up the brain and its tissues, making it hard for the opponent to breathe. It’s effective on both humans and spirits alike.
Evil Crushing Elbow
An elbow drop that renders any electronics broken to the point of being inaccessible
Double Hydrogen Water Mist
Reigen pulls out a spray bottle and starts spraying water in order to use its hydrogen gas to repel the attack of an evil spirit.
Rainbow Seal
Reigen pulls out his trusty spray paint and sprays a large amount of it to try and hide a spirit’s face on a wall.
Justifiable Self Defense Rush
Reigen sends out a flurry of punches onto his opponent while yelling out “self-defense”. In truth he’s unsure whether it’s true self-defense but he’s yelling it out which is all that matters.
Stanley Pines
Boxing
After the Pines brothers’ were constantly picked on by their local bullies, Stan’s father decided to force Stan and his brother to take boxing lessons. They proved to be especially useful when Stan protected a woman named Carla from a robber by punching him hard enough to knock him out.
Accelerated Growth
I can’t even begin to explain this one. I had to see it so I’ll make you see it too hehe.
Forms
Reigen Arataka
Reigen 1000%
When Mob was about to unleash 100% of his power to protect his friends from the oncoming Claw 7, Reigen managed to snap him out of his delusions and pull himself back together. Begging for Mob to not fight in order to prevent his suffering, Reigen would accidentally get Mob’s powers as a result of Mob unintentionally reaching 100% gratitude after being so moved by Reigen’s speech. Now having a hold of Mob’s powers for a limited time (see Before the Verdicts), Reigen would use those powers to fight the battle that Mob couldn’t.
It’s safe to presume that Reigen not only gets access to all of Mob’s 100% abilities at that point in time but that he should be at the same power level, if not higher given the circumstances. These abilities include the following:
- Purification
- The ability to cleanse evil spirits (in this case it’d be curses)
- Telekinesis
- The ability to control physical objects through thought alone
- Energy Manipulation/Absorption
- The ability to manipulate psychic energy and absorb it directly from other espers to increase one’s psychic power
- Astral Projection
- The ability to will his own soul out of his body
- Extrasensory Perception
- The ability to see spiritual energy
- Chlorokinesis
- The ability to control plants
- Forcefield Creation
- The ability to create psychic force fields that protect the user from any incoming attacks
- Flight
- The ability to freely levitate
- Smoke Creation
- The ability to create… well… smoke
- Regeneration
- The ability to regenerate on both a physical and spiritual level
- In terms of physical regeneration, Mob was able to heal himself and allies within a large radius, going as far to heal wounds such as broken bones
- In terms of spiritual regeneration, Mob could come back from being ripped to shreds while being a spirit
- And many other fun powers…
Despite only having Mob’s power temporarily tossed over to him, Reigen could easily exorcise powerful spirits with punches that he didn’t even land and overpower all the major members of Claw 7 one at a time. Everyone who works in the 7th division can roughly scale to each other along with scaling to base Mob as they could not only match up but overpower his casual state depending on the member. Terada could uproot and shatter trees, Megumu could break through barriers created by base Mob, and Ishiguro had the power to completely erase an entire building (remember this scaling for later). All of these feats generally scale to Building Level, and 1000% Reigen was able to completely nullify the attacks from the strongest members of the group.
If we really wanted to go further, we can figure out that 1000% Reigen is equal, if not stronger, than 100% Mob. Every single bit of psychic power had been given to Reigen so assuming they’re equals in terms of power is a safe bet, but it’s evident that 1000% Reigen is more powerful than 100% Mob by a slight margin; this is due to Reigen being completely unaffected when Sakurai’s Cursed Perfume was used on him, which was the same perfume that was able to knock a 100% hostile Mob unconscious (and no, before anyone mentions it, Reigen 1000% isn’t quite literally 10 times more powerful than 100% Mob as the percentage is simply a way to measure Mob’s emotions).
Being at the power level of 100% Mob at the very least is impressive given that Mob is the pinnacle of his verse in terms of scaling. I won’t go fully into depth on where 100% Mob scales since that would be a rabbit hole too big for this blog but to simplify things, Mob would have Country-Multi Continental AP and Durability along with Massively Hypersonic speeds. Mob’s AP and durability comes from his capability to match Toichiro in power and the level of destruction he caused in Mogami’s mental world with his strongest emotion (100% Courage). Meanwhile Mob’s speed comes from him being able to spread fragments of a city over tens of thousands of meters in a single millisecond. This should be 100% Mob’s peak power and Reigen 1000% should be comparable to these stats.
I do have to mention it wouldn’t be entirely as effective as if Mob were using it since Reigen has shown no ability to use its full potential or properly contain such power without having it fizz out like a weak flame. Reigen only had the power for a minute tops, although one could argue that Mob’s previous exhaustion of energy was what led to Reigen’s short time limit.

Feats
Reigen Arataka
Overall
- Is the Greatest Psychic of the 21st Century (real)
- Built a successful psychic-related service from the ground up
- Satisfied every single one of his customers
- Forced the 7th division of Claw to dismantle
- Stood up against the boss of Claw who was also one of the most powerful espers of all time
- Was the only one able to snap ???% Mob out of his state
- Defeated Claw 7, Shimizaki, ???% Mob (mentally)
Strength
- Launches a man with an uppercut
- Held onto the ground against a gravity well for several seconds
- Punches the spirit of a biker gang leader hard enough to cave his face
- Ultimately didn’t have the psychic power to actually hurt him
- Strong enough to fight people possessed by a powerful spirit named Mogami (Small Building Level)
- When Mogami possesses people, he greatly enhances his host’s power while being able to use his own powers while inside. No matter who Mogami possesses, those same stats will always be transferred to the next body he possesses
- Now as for Mogami’s stats, when possessing Minori, he is shown to be strong enough to create a decently-sized crater in the concrete floor. Mogami also tanks a powerful psychic blast from base Mob which on top of that should’ve erased him since he was a spirit. This put Mogami at Wall Level+ in AP and Small Building Level in durability
- The power from the blast greatly increases the psychic bond between Mogami and his host, which in turn also increased their physical power, and this happens right before he made that crater in the floor
- Reigen was able to stop Mogami running momentum by kicking him in the head
- Mogami possesses Jodo amd rushes towards the other psychics but Reigen strikes with a strong knee to the stomach, forcing Mogami to exit the body
- Kicked Ishiguro hard enough to push him to the ground (Small Building Level)
- Ishiguro has superior durability to the rest of Claw 7’s division whom could withstand casual attacks from Base Mob, is also far superior to Terada who could uproot and shatter multiple trees
- Punched Muraki hard enough to knock him back a bit (Small Building Level)
- Muraki should also scale to the rest of Claw 7
- Was able to push Ryo Shimizaki to the ground with his multiple punches (Small Building Level+)
- Assuming the lowest stats, Ryo was completely unharmed by an explosion caused by Teru
- Despite Ryo’s durability being weakened when he is hit by an unexpected attack, he still took hits from Claw 7 while off guard and was still able to fight, and if you remember from earlier, Claw 7 generally scales to Small Building Level
- Kept ???% Mob locked in place for 20 seconds (Large Building Level at the minimum) (see Before the Verdicts)
Speed
- Is often able to create afterimages (Subsonic)
- Ran away from a giant Tsuchineko spirit
- Able to get behind Ishiguro before he can notice and knock him down with a dropkick (Subsonic+)
- Ishiguro was able to outspeed a casual Mob that could react at subsonic speeds
- Was able to attack a weakened Ryo Shimizaki with multiple punches before he noticed
- Outran a falling building that was about to land on top of him
Durability
- Survived numerous gusts of wind that blew him back multiple meters
- Falls off a cliff and survives
- Wasn’t too hurt from being bitten by a spirit
- Survived being blown away by the shockwaves coming from Wriggle Wriggle
- Was slammed into the ground by a powered up Mogami which creates a decently-sized crater in the concrete floor (Wall Level+)
- Despite surviving the attack, he was unable to move for half an hour
- Took many, and I mean MANY, attacks from a casual ???% Mob that was slowly walking towards a pre-planned location (Large Building Level+)(see Before the Verdicts)
Stamina
- While possessed by the evil spirit Rusty-sama, a spirit who drains the life force and stamina of its host, he was able to hail a taxi, ride it to a paranormal site, and then trek through rough terrain while remaining conscious the entire time
- Stayed up late night after night to exorcise a spirit that was in the popular online game Fantasy Hell
- Continued to chase Mob despite being pushed back and attacked multiple times to the point of passing out

- Said pterodactyl had no problem ripping off the roof of a car
- Knocked out a giant squid
- Punches a bunch of eagles out of the sky
- Should scale to Dipper
- Physically overpowered the Multi-Bear
- Is comparable to Manotaurs that could smash large boulders and bust through cave walls (Wall Level+)
- Could withstand the shockwaves from Gideon’s mech blowing up (Large Building Level+)(see Before the Verdicts)
- Got into a fist fight with Stan Lee
Speed
- Uncuffed himself in the blink of an eye
- Jumped away from an explosion right before it occurred

Weaknesses
Reigen Arataka
Reigen may be a skilled con artist but he isn’t without his flaws. Even though he’s able to reason with a majority of the level-headed citizens of Seasoning City, he finds it very difficult to reason with people that have a child-like mentality or reasons for their actions. Likewise, Reigen finds it hard to think logically when he is pushed into a corner. He often acts like a total jerk to those around him and he has no way to properly deal with supernatural matters without Mob. He is also very much still human compared to his world filled with dangerous spirits and such.
Oh yeah and he's VERY weak to alcohol. He got hella wasted off a single lemon sour with no traces of alcohol.
Stanley Pines
Even with his conning skills being at an all time high, Stan is lacking in other departments such as in academics and social situations that aren’t earning him money. His emotions can get the best of him, whether it’d be his rage costing Ford his dream high school or his anger also coincidentally aimed at Ford ruining the moment where they could have defeated Bill using the cipher wheel. He just struggles to read the room at times which leads to situations backfiring in his face on more than one occasion. Oh and also just like Reigen, he is still human compared to a lot of his world’s supernatural creatures. Even his old man body can be a pitfall sometimes, although it seems to be played more for comedy rather than something that should seriously be considered.
Before the Verdicts
Isn’t Reigen’s powerup into 1000% a very temporary one?
You would be right. This one is simple to explain.
Reigen’s 1000% form shouldn’t be considered a part of his standard arsenal. The only reason that Reigen got that form to begin with was because of a very context-specific scenario that required Mob to transfer all of his energy through feeling 100% gratitude for Reigen. For a little more context, due to Mob’s self-inflicted limits on his power, he’s unable to reach his full strength until he feels a strong enough emotion to explode his power output, hence why Mob’s emotions are represented by a percentage out of 100. Depending on the kind of emotion he feels the strongest of in that moment, his explosion of power can have differing effects. In this case, 100% gratitude lets Mob transfer his full power into someone he trusts, someone he can look up to in desperate times. It’s wasn’t even something that Mob was aware that he could do as it was purely an accident on his part.
Since we’re of course not including Mob in this fight, it would be physically impossible for Reigen to access this form to begin with.
How could Reigen possibly scale to ???% Mob?
Call me crazy for this one but I found a way to make this work.
For some context to those who are unaware, the final arc of Mob Psycho consists of Mob getting hit by a car when he’s the most excited he’s ever been about confessing to his crush. ???%, which is basically his ultimate but uncontrollable form of power, awakens and completely takes over his body and mind, proceeding to obsessively follow Mob’s intention of confessing to his crush, even if he had to destroy everything that came his way.
While we don’t see the full output of a bloodlusted ???% Mob like on previous occasions, a casual ???% Mob is certainly no joke. For reference, here are all the things ???% Mob could do on a casual level:
- ???% Mob broke an entire street when he awoke
- That same level of power was able to create a city-wide earthquake and a huge tornado
- ???% Mob’s casual power output alone was giving espers like Teruki a hard time to withstand
- ??? Mob’s gravity manipulation should naturally be much more powerful than Ishiguro’s gravity wells
- Mob’s power had been growing ever since he awoke, so by the time that Reigen catches up to him, he is much more powerful than when he performed his other feats
Even with a seemingly unstoppable force walking through the city, Reigen had the courage to attempt to get close and snap Mob out of his delusion. Here is everything that Reigen had to endure while chasing Mob:
- (Anime/Manga) Managed to survive being pushed by strong winds that pulled him into the air and flung him around
- (Anime) Is thrown hard enough into a nearby wall by ???% Mob to create a crater
- (Anime) Survives being thrown hard enough into a bus to dent it
- (Anime) Survived being slammed into the ground by ???% Mob increasing gravity on top of him
- (Manga) Took a point blank hit from Mob’s aura
Despite all the pain he had to endure, he was eventually able to get in front of Mob and hold him back with the help of Dimple and his ability to possess humans. Even when Dimple had left Reigen’s body, Reigen was still strong enough to keep Mob at bay for 20 seconds, stalling long enough to tell him the truth and snap him out of ???% mode (here’s the anime version with an actual timeframe; it’s not letting me download the video to attach it to Imgur so this will do for now).
Now you might say that simply holding someone back for a few seconds doesn’t equate to them being on the same level but you have to remember that Mob was still outputting a casual level of power that gave espers like Teruki a struggle to resist. That being said, I don't think Reigen scales to the higher feats that ???% Mob performs during this arc. Reigen is never hit by anything that scales to the city block, town, or even mountain level range, so although you *could* make the argument that ???% Mob’s casual power was actually within the range the entire time, I’m gonna go with a much safer option for the time being.
I think the best power level to put Reigen at with this scaling is Large Building Level. Mob destroying entire apartment buildings is the most casual that ???% Mob has gotten without outright targeting someone (we’re not counting the earthquake because it seems to be a passive effect of his power rather than an amount he purposefully dishes out against people in his way). In turn Reigen taking those many attacks from a ???% Mob that wasn’t even entirely focused on him would scale him to that level of power in both AP and Durability.
Putting Reigen at that level wouldn’t be too much of a stretch either since it lines up with Reigen being able to affect building-level espers with his attacks. He even states that he had secretly gotten stronger ever since the last huge conflict, and back then he was already at the lower ends of the building level range.
TL;DR, Reigen was able to take hits from and even hold back a very casual ???% Mob that can destroy entire apartment buildings with little to no effort, putting him within a Large Building Level range at the bare minimum.
Isn’t Grunkle Stan town level???
I think y’all are familiar with this one. The infamous town level Gravity Falls feat. Well spoiler alert, I’m here to tell you that it may not be the feat that you all have been hoping for.
While yes, the explosion of the mech itself has been proven to be multi city block to town level (and possibly higher), none of the characters can actually scale to the explosion directly. Gideon was inside the mech which would protect him from the explosion and Dipper and Mabel were both just barely outside of its range (but I’ll get to that in a sec). That’s not mentioning that previous calculations have used both inconsistent heights for the mech and vaporization levels for the wrong material when Gideon’s mech made that crater in the ground. To be more specific on the latter, the vaporization levels used was the one for rock and not the one for dirt which would drastically change the final amount of energy needed to make that crater.
Not all is lost however. Since Dipper and Mabel were on the edge of that mech explosion, we can use that to calculate their durability which in turn can be used to find their AP levels (which would roughly be the same).
If we were to lowball the amount of energy that Dipper and Mabel were being hit by at the edge of the explosion, then they would’ve been hit by a total amount of 0.00045701944 tons of TNT, putting them at Wall Level. The calc itself can be found here.
If we were to highball the amount of energy that Dipper and Mabel were being hit by, then they would’ve been hit by a total amount of 333.48 kilotons of TNT, putting them at Large Building Level. The calc itself can be found here.
With these newfound calcs, Stan, and consequently every other human in Gravity Falls, can only scale as high as Large Building Level in terms of AP and possibly durability. This does line up with the previous building level feats found in Gravity Falls and is still impressive all things considered. I apologize to everyone who believed in town level Gravity Falls but that’s just how it be sometimes.
Didn’t Stan trick the literal demon that was able to see into the future and infinite versions of himself across infinite timelines??
Yes. Yes he did. But he kinda didn’t.
For context, Stan had come up with a plan to defeat Bill Cipher once and for all. His plan was to trick Bill Cipher into entering his mind by swapping identities with his brother Ford, which will give Ford the chance to use the memory gun on Stan and erase his memories alongside Bill. One quick change of clothes and one convincing impression of Ford later, that plan went off without a hitch.
Like I had mentioned before, Bill Cipher is a being capable of seeing himself across infinite timelines and into the future with no limitations to his range. Theoretically he would have seen Stan’s plan incoming with his natural perception of time, and yet he utterly lost, therefore Grunkle Stan fate manipulation real!!! (or whatever hypothetical power Stan would have in this situation)
However, it’s important to consider the context of this situation specifically. It’s clear that Bill had let his ego get to him, becoming distracted by the idea of escaping Gravity Falls and ruling the universe. Along with the fact that he never perceives anyone like Stan as a threat, Bill had completely let his guard down, meaning that there’s little to zero chance that he even considered using his time powers to make sure Ford was the real deal. He had no reason to suspect such a thing to begin with as in his eyes, the deal was already done. His time powers aren’t an ability that’s always active either since he’s been caught off guard on more than one occasion.
I don’t think this entirely disregards Stan’s feat however. Removing time powers out of the equation, Stan was still able to trick a Bill that had a trillion years’ worth of experience under his belt. Bill’s been manipulating humanity for centuries and has shown to outwit and outplay every major character in the series in one way or another… except for Stan. Even if this is usually way out of his league compared to his more consistent feats of intelligence, it simply can’t be ignored. Stan is smarter than Bill in terms of pure wits alone.
Verdicts
Alright, the combatants are set! We’ve run the data through all possibilities and now, it’s time for a DEATH BATTLE!Toxin
WOW this matchup was a tiny bit more complicated than I thought. I gotta stop underestimating my own MU’s for my blogs.
Anyways this fight was a bit closer than it might have seemed. It comes to no surprise that these loveable con-artists were capable of so much in their respective worlds but they were able to match each other in many ways surprisingly. Let’s split this verdict up into three main sections.
Experience, Wits and Smarts
The most important aspect of being a con-artist is having the ability to outsmart your customers through any means possible and both can be considered impressive in this category. In Reigen’s case, he’s been lying to people’s faces for multiple years with his believable scams and reading people’s emotions to use said emotions against them in the near future. Having no qualms about manipulating anyone except for Mob really gives him the freedom to con them how he pleases and it’s apparent that his wisdom can carry him pretty far as evident in his own verse. He’s even able to beat other con artists at their own game without breaking as much of a sweat. Meanwhile in Stan’s case, one could argue that he has the higher intelligence feats with how he faked his own death and changed identities multiple times, trick the likes of beings such as Bill Cipher who had been manipulating humanity ever since its conception, and figuring out how to read Ford’s complicated instructions in order to fix the portal that Ford and McGucket had built. He even has the experience to back it up considering that he’s at the ripe age of elderly (I just found out he has no concrete age).
While it’s clear that Stan has the greater feats of intelligence, you’d be hard-pressed to convince me that this kind of intelligence is consistent. This is the same guy that had to change identities *because* of his inability to sell convincing products to his customers along with his many failed attempts in criminal activity. There were many, and I mean many, times afterwards where he was put into terrible situations because of a lack of thinking on his part, too many to list here in fact.
Reigen’s shown a much more consistent track record as a con-artist, maintaining a facade that only broke when he was truly cornered, such as when he was exposed on live TV that he wasn’t this all-powerful psychic that he claimed to be. Meanwhile Stan is over here struggling to get people to be satisfied with his products and only got to succeed by taking advantage of Gravity Falls and its tourist-based income potential. His practices aren’t the most convincing either given that he has a reputation of breaking the law and is overall sketchy in his actions. On the opposite spectrum however, I’d say overall smarts go to Stan. You just can’t ignore how much of a better manipulator and solutionist Stan is with how he could trick the likes of Bill and figure out Ford’s codes and such, and while Reigen has shown that he can come up with solutions on the fly, it just can’t really compare to what Stan has done, even if I just stated how inconsistent it can be at times.
With that all being said, I’d say that as a con-artist, Reigen is smarter. When it comes to general smarts however, Stan takes this category.
Arsenal
Both of Reigen’s and Stan’s arsenals provide an interesting contrast from each other, with how Reigen has more abilities while Stan has more weapons on hand. Starting with weapons, Reigen’s got a few choices to work with. He’s got salt to throw, bolt cutters to bludgeon someone with, and a gun that will do good damage to someone like Stan. His many fighting moves showcase a much greater proficiency in fisticuffs and would be able to provide some decent distractions such as with his Salt Splash and Hypnosis Punch, which could be further expanded by his tendency to yell out what he’s gonna do but then do a completely opposite move. The best thing he has in his arsenal however would have to be the cursed perfume as it can instantly knock someone out if they get a whiff, and considering that Stan was never a psychic, it would be Reigen’s best chance of one-shotting Stan.
Unfortunately for Reigen, Stan has everything he needs to keep Reigen at bay.
Stan’s got his boxing skills alongside weapons like baseball bats, brass knuckles, axes, maces, and such to hold back Reigen, his smoke bombs would let him cause confusion and create distance between them, which he can then use the ranged part of his arsenal such as his guns or illegal fireworks to blow Reigen away. He even has more unorthodox ways of attacking Reigen such as sending Shanklin the Stab Possum after him or hopping in his Stanmobile to run him over. If the fight were to take place in the Mystery Shack, then Stan would have the homefield advantage plus even more options with items such as the copier machine and electron carpet to distract Reigen further.
Having said that, it’s clear that Stan has the wider arsenal but it’s nothing that Reigen can’t push through (for the most part). Brawling against others is his specialty so he would be able to disarm and match Stan’s melee combat, he can also fight ranged with his gun, and he can even handle the stranger parts of Stan’s arsenal. He can use hydrogen water mist to destroy the clones, the electron carpet would negatively affect them both so they’d switch back as soon as possible, and the possum and car wouldn’t do much if Reigen was able to dodge them. What will really pose a problem for Reigen however are Stan’s guns and the universe portal. Getting sucked into the portal would result in a win for Stan via BFR and the shootout against Stan’s guns really depends on speed which I’ll get to in a sec.
On average, while Reigen’s arsenal could be argued to have much greater utility and a much more consistent way to one-shot, Stan has many more options that will distract Reigen long enough for him to pull out his wincon more often than not. It’ll all depend on stats which is luckily the next part.
Physicality
For being regular humans, these two are considerably impressive compared to every other average Joe in their world. For the longest time it seemed like Stan would’ve taken the strength advantage due to the town-level scaling of Gravity Falls but now that it had been fact checked, Stan would be at the large-building range now. Along with the newfound scaling of Reigen withstanding and holding back a VERY casual ???% Mob, both Reigen and Stan are actual equal in terms of AP and durability, meaning that they would in fact be able to harm each other. You could even argue for higher strength if you believe the original Gravity Falls scaling + highball ???% Mob’s casual energy output but the general idea is that neither are blatantly stronger than the other.
Unfortunately speed is a completely different story. Reigen bros… it’s not looking so good for you right now.
Reigen can reach subsonic speeds and possibly higher which isn’t too bad… until you compare it to the likes of Gravity Falls speed scaling. Dipper casually dodging light on more than one occasion is enough to put him at relativistic and Stan would be comparable to this and maybe even upscale. If we were to assume Reigen was at the peak of Subsonic+ and Stan was the lowest of Relativistic, there would still be a whopping 97,112.12 times difference in speed. Even if we somehow scaled Reigen to the highest speeds in Mob Psycho 100, he doesn’t showspeed even close to that of Gravity Falls as the verse only peaks at Massively Hypersonic+.
On the bright side, Reigen has levels of stamina that go beyond anything Stan has shown to have, so it will take a while for Stan to take down Reigen without his guns or the universe portal.
Conclusion
To end this verdict off, I had a feeling that Stan had a better shot of winning even when his town-level scaling crumbled in front of his eyes. Reigen is certainly a threat when he’s able to con someone like Stan into a situation where he can take the win, whether it’d be through his physical prowess or his cursed perfume. More chances that not however, I believe that Stan takes this fight with his superior arsenal, smarts, and ESPECIALLY superior speed. Reigen simply Stan-ded no chance against the mysterious wonder that is Stanley Pines.
The winner is Grunkle Stan.
Kars
Ah yes bikini bottom- wait this isnt the SpongeBob vs Necoarc blog? Shit well anyways, your here for the con artist fight and im your con artist discord death battle member (managed to trick a group of people into believing the worst scales ever by sheer dumbluck) nough bout me you want to know who wins and its close like really clos- its Reigen look our grunkle maybe cool but he just doesnt have enough ap to take him down, even if we want to lowball Regien he still is able to deal with and take hits from ??? Mob who we KNOW never holds back because he just doesnt know any better, and upon activation it literally destroys a city block, one taps a villain that 100% mob struggled with y’know the one that also destroyed an entire city, i think its safe to say Reigen is taking everything Stan can throw at him and just throwing it back right at him, i know stan should be faster by a large margin but he just gets stone walled till hes hit enough that he falls, we know when stan fights people near his strength he gets clocked out, its only a matter of time before he just cant take it
Stan put up a great fight but couldnt handle the Arataka
The winner should be Reigen.
Saul
Hi guys, Saul here. First I want to thank Toxin for letting me write a verdict. I’m going to try and break this down to the best of my ability. So let’s get into this!
Stats
So this blog had a few explanations on the stats of both. From what i’m seeing in terms of physicals, Stan and Raigen should be similar in strength and durability. Stan scales to the large building explosion taken by the twins, while Reigen scales to the casual feats of ??? Mob. This should put them roughly similar in terms of strength and durability, being able to harm each other. Speed is a much different, more unfortunate tale for one of these characters. Reigen scales to subsonic feats like outpacing a casual Mob, creating afterimages, and dodging psychic attacks. That’s nowhere near Grunkle Stan's best, scaling to Dipper. Dipper has both been able to dodge under a beam of light from the flashlight and dodge beams from the memory gun which would put him at relativistic speeds. This is an incredible difference that gives Grunkle Stan a massive advantage in this category. While they’re both the same in terms of physical stats, Grunkle Stan massively outspeeds.Arsenal and Abilities
Reigen has come in swinging with what he has. He has salt, bolt cutters, a series of different attacks with some strange names, and more. Reigen has some pretty good weapons as well, like the Sakurai’s Cursed Perfume. With this, it knocks people out with one dosage, strong enough for individuals like 100% Mob. He also owns an Air Gun, firing out small rounds of air bullets. Even his Salt is useful, it’s like pocket sand. It also helps that he’s abnormally strong and has a green belt in kung-fu. While Reigen seems powerful on the surface, many of these techniques are going to struggle to do serious damage to Grunkle Stan. Many of his attacks, in reality, are a series of punches and kicks while Reigen distracts the opponent. His opponent, Grunkle Stan, is a boxer. While it’s not directly stated how far Stan got into his boxing career, we can assume that he's at a competent level to match an individual like Reigen. You don’t just punch a pterodactyl out of nowhere.Salt would only cause a brief distraction, while the air-gun doesn’t have any real special properties outside of the invisible nature of the bullets. But that pesky Sakurai’s Cursed Perfume. If he managed to spray that on Grunkle Stan, he would likely be KO’ed, allowing for a victory from Reigen. Although, this has a few issues. Not only does Grunkle Stan have the speed advantage, making it hard to target him, but if Stan stays at range? He could ultimately use that to his advantage. That’s ignoring what would happen if Stan managed to get his hands on it and use it on Reigen.
Stan has a good arsenal of weapons for himself. With his Smoke Bombs, he could create constant distractions for Reigen. If a close range situation is needed Stan has Brass Knuckles and a Baseball Bat to beat the boy up. Need some range? Stan apparently owns some guns he could use, or some Illegal Fireworks to blow Reigen sky high. Screw it! Use his car and run that boy over, it’s only a crime if they find him. The Mystery Shack also gives a home-field advantage that Reigen would struggle to navigate around. Stan could use the passages to get the jump on Reigen if needed. If he managed to get away, Stan could use the Copier Machine to send an army of clones to fight Reigen. He even has the universe portal to BFR Reigen to another dimension. But, perhaps my favourite interaction of abilities? Stan uses the Electron Carpet and switches Reigens mind with Shanklin the Stab Possum.
With all of this being said, Stan holds the advantage in long and close quarters combat thanks to his weapons. While Reigen has a bunch of weird fighting techniques, Stan's boxing history should match the boys' martial arts. While Reigen has oneshot potential with the Sakurai’s Cursed Perfume, Stan could just avoid it or knock it out of Reigens hand, or use it himself. The Mystery Shack offers a home field advantage with a potential paper army and BFR win conditions. All in all, Stan takes this for me.
Any Other Factors
A usually unimportant category, any other factor contains the most interesting debate of them all. Who is smarter and the better con-man? Well, Reigen definitely has some merits. He’s able to read through people's emotions and understand them pretty easily, using it to scam people. He’s specifically seen through other con-men before. But, man, you aren’t beating Grunkle Stan. This man manages to fake his own death and change his identity like it’s a daily move. He’s seen through Little Gideon, a child who tricked Gravity Falls into believing he’s innocent, and Bill Cipher. Stan tricked a monster who could manipulate all of humanity. He’s the better con-man and manipulator, no doubt.
Stan is also smarter, easily. Solving the complicated instructions and codes within his brother's journal, making a portal, knowing how dimensional travel works, would surpass any knowledge that Reigen wished he had.
So yeah! Stan is the better con-man and is smarter. While Reigen has shown his facade is hard to notice, Stan has proven he’s able to see through manipulators like Gideon. His deceptions would likely work on Reigen given the fact that he tricked Bill.

Conclusion
For a while, I assumed that Reigen would win. He's seemingly ??? scaling and oneshot options with his perfume made him a viable threat. While I said he’s not as smart as Stan. he definitely could potentially con someone into a situation of using that perfume to get a win. But man, it’s Grunkle Stan. He’s way faster, has much better gear to use, way smarter, the better con-man, and is my pick for the winner of this fight. I bet Reigen is gonna miss this battle, but his aim is getting better! His aim is getting better!
His ai- ok i’ll leave.
TheDarkLoreMaster
Sup folks, it's-a me, The Dark Lore Master and I'm gonna get right to it.
So going over stats first Reigen and Stan are about even in strength and durability, with both clocking in at about Small to Large Building Level. However in speed, Stan absolutely blows Reigen out of the water, being millions of times faster, meaning that Stan is more likely to hit any potential wincons. Stan is also more skilled than Reigen being in more fights and scams throughout his years (even squaring up with Stan Lee himself so Stan absolutely scales above Marvel Heralds/Skyfathers trust me I'm the guy who found that mhm).
In terms of who has the better equipment that is definently the closest part of this match. While Stan has more equipment and ten guns to make sure that nobody dare break into his private
domicile and put a *shudders* a ladder in there, Reigen can match this with his psychic hand gun which could potentially be strong enough to hurt people way above him and by proxy Stan. He can also put Stan to sleep with his cursed perfume, opening him up to a KO.
However due to Stan's speed, it would make it incredibly difficult to get off and when you throw in his clones, it'd be far too difficult for the Phony Psychic to win, making the winner of this bout "Mr Mystery", or better known as Stanley Pines.
Supermonye
What’s up guys, Supermonye here, and I’m to give my verdicts on this here blog.
Before I do that, can I just say how much I love Mob Psycho and ESPECIALLY Reigen? I only joined the blog because of him after all. Possibly the best-written character I’ve experienced in any anime I’ve watched. Please watch Mob Psycho.
Gravity Falls is also pretty cool. While I‘m not nearly as attached to the show as I am to Mob Psycho, I’d advice you to watch it as well. It’s considered one of Disney’s GOATS for a reason.
Anyway, let’s start with intelligence. This is a category both characters are pretty much revered for, and in a death battle like this, it’s now even more essential. And while both have pretty impressive showings of intelligence, I’d probably give this to Reigen. While Stan has the more “impressive” feat to work with, I’d argue that Reigen has more consistent showings of Intelligence. I’d even give him skill as well, due to more of his upfront showings against much more powerful opponents than Stan.
Now let’s talk weapons then! This one looks like a real quantity vs quality ordeal here. Stan has loads of guns, an axe, and a crossbow, all weapons that would be highly effective towards Reigen like it would be to any normal person. But what Reigen doesn't make up for in numbers, he does in usefulness.
Those of curse are the Cursed Perfume and the Air Gun.
The perfume especially is super useful here. A spray that almost instantly puts people to sleep. Considering that good ol Stan isn't a Psychic, should Reigen hit him once with this perfume, combined with the might of the gun, it would be an instant win for Reigen.
But hey, that’s IF he can land a decent hit.
Let’s talk about stats then. Both are Large Building in both strength and durability, with putting them on around equal footing. Considering that ???% Mob is being lowballed for the sake of Reigen being Reigen, I’m inclined to give him the slight edge in these stats, but not enough for it to really matter. That’s because of the make or break in this fight. Speed. Stan scales to dipper dodging light, putting him at Relativistic speeds. Now how does Reigen stack up to that?
. . .
WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE’S SUBSONIC??
No… It can’t be! He's approximately Five Hundred and Thirty-Seven thousand four hundred and ten times slower!
W-What about if we scale him fully to Mob?
Listen, from the tone of this verdict, you can probably tell that this was heading towards a Reigen win. And trust me, I tried. I tried to look for any way that Reigen could even come close to tagging him. But combining Stan’s speed with his smoke bombs leads me to believe that Reigen just… can't touch him. At all. As much as I really want to give this one to Reigen, he’s fighting against someone with comparable strength and toughness, who just so happens to be much faster than him. His chances of winning have sunk, just like the Stan O War.
The winner is Grunkle Stan!

Potential
Guess this is a thing I’m doing for every one of my future blogs. Awesome.
My current belief is that Reigen vs Stan would be THE matchup to bring the best out of both of their potential if they were to come to Death Battle. Even outside of a versus setting, these two con artists are considered to be fan favorite characters from their respective series’. Whether it’d be their witty remarks, their loveable inner nature or their ability to BS their way out of (mostly) anything, I speak for everyone when I say that they would both be a blast to see on the show. Plus I think people would love to see franchises like Mob Psycho and Gravity Falls return to the show when it seems like their series’ best matchups had already been done.
That’s not even mentioning how a hypothetical Reigen vs Stan episode would easily become a favorite of the season for many with how hilarious the episode can be. We’re talking about two characters that are some of the highest highs in comedy in their home series’, so having them both present in the same area is simply a recipe for comedy gold. In fact their banter potential is one of the strongest aspects of this matchup (as expected). Watching Reigen and Stan try to trick the other into falling for their cons would provide some lighthearted and fun character interaction that can then lead into the actual fight itself and carry out throughout the entirety of their battle (but I’ll get to that in a bit).
Connection-wise, Reigen and Stan have plenty of connections that go beyond the surface level similarities of being con-artists. Despite being normal humans in a supernatural world, they managed to start businesses based around paranormal activity from scratch and keep them successful through their ability to trick their customers into thinking their work was legitimate. They are well known for being somewhat mean-spirited and fradulant con artists that aren't afraid to scam people out of their money, taking up supernatural matters that they are aware of but unable to fully understand. Through all the shifty and sneaky things they’ve done during their career however, they genuinely value the people that are close to them, gaining the found family that they themselves had lacked for many years. The closest of those people turn out to be middle schoolers that excel in areas where Reigen and Stan couldn’t. Even without any real special abilities, they manage to hold their own in conflict through their quick wits, silver tongue, and good old brute force in order to get out of those situations. It’s crazy to think that they are considered to be the most responsible adults in their series even after we’ve witnessed all the dishonesty and deception they’ve used on others.
Now, as for the fight itself, this is the other aspect where this matchup truly shines. Their more down-to-earth fighting style and unique but effective arsenals would surely make the fight an interesting scramble where they try to knock the other out. When you tie this in with their potential to cheat and outwit the other, you have a recipe for a fight that could easily match the likes of Hercule vs Dan in terms of pure bullshit. Let’s give ourselves an example.
Reigen is taking a business trip to America and finds himself within the mysterious town of Gravity Falls in hopes of finding work opportunities there. Soon enough he comes across the Mystery Shack and meets Grunkle Stan for the first time. Stan feels unsure about this new guy but nonetheless attempts his usual schtick of conning his customer into buying his overpriced gifts and Mystery Shack tours, seeing him as a sucker that is in desperate need of weird souvenirs. Meanwhile Reigen, being the self-proclaimed master psychic that he is, sees this old guy as a fool that’s begging to be cleansed of evil spirits, so he tries to con Stan into buying one of his exorcisms. As they make conversation and try to trick the other into buying their cheap wares, Reigen eventually figures out that the Mystery Shack was simply a charade for laundering money away from customers and calls out Stan for it. Stan tries to talk his way out of the situation but Reigen then proceeds to grab salt from his pocket and does his infamous “SALT SPLASH” towards Stan, getting plenty of salt in his eyes.
Now realizing that this Reigen guy is a threat to his entire business, Stan rushes forward and attempts to knock Reigen out with a single punch but he is outmaneuvered, leading to the ignition of a fist fight. As they move from room to room, they pull out different parts of their arsenal to try and get the advantage over the other. Reigen pulls out his many signature moves and his boltcutters while Stan pulls out his many weapons scattered around the house such as his bat, his brass knuckles, and his childhood pet possum that is willing to stab Reigen. Stan keeps the distance with his smoke bombs while Reigen tries to get in close to use his martial arts know-how and cursed perfume to knock out Stan. Having the fight take place in the Mystery Shack would be great considering that it gives Stan access to items that could shake up the battle such as the copier machine and the electron carpet, both of which Reigen can bypass (Reigen can use his hydrogen water mist to destroy the clones and the electron carpet would affect them both negatively so they would switch back as soon as possible). This all builds up to the climax where they both end either end up outside or in the underground lab. No matter which location, they would both pull out their respective guns and start a gun fight, constantly shooting and dodging each others bullets until they’re both able to disarm the other. One final brawl would ensue, and depending on the location, there would be a different ending to the fight. If they’re outside, Stan would stall long enough to set up Nightmare Head so that it could crash down onto Reigen. If they’re in the lab, their ongoing brawl would accidentally activate the portal like how it did when Stan and Ford were fighting, and the one who gets sucked in the portal would be deemed the loser.
Or something like that.
There are probably some hiccups in my example but this is how I imagine a fight would go down between the two. I can just as easily imagine what the fight would look like visually too with sprites probably being the best option for the animation. I can’t imagine there being anything else to make it stand out visually besides the very fun effects that appear when Reigen uses one of his special techniques. When it comes to music however, I think the combination of Mob Psycho 100’s and Gravity Falls’ music is one that isn’t talked about enough.
I mean, imagine a mix of Reigen’s multiple themes with the Gravity Falls’ theme, it would end up creating an energetic and catchy song that would capture the expressive and charming nature of Reigen and Stan.
Overall this MU would make for a fun episode that completely avoids the ongoing issue of there being too many fights that go into the higher tiers cosmology rather than staying more down-to-earth. Even if Reigen and Grunkle Stan have alternate matchups that others may prefer, it’s pretty clear that this MU is beloved by many and that it’s one of the most popular of both of their options. Here’s to hoping that we get that Reigen vs Grunkle Stan episode one day…
